Two Sisters Make Climb to Help Raise Funds and Awareness for Mesothelioma

Cathy and Jennifer Shutt of Menston, England lost their father Michael to mesothelioma in November 2008.  Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer most often caused by exposure to asbestos.  Hats go off to the duo that recently completed a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of their late father.

The climb raised thousands of pounds for the charity Mesothelioma UK (donations are still being accepted) and helped to raise awareness of the disease. They fully funded their own trips so any and all donations are going to the foundation.

The sisters’ courageous journey is a great example of the initiative that  individuals are  showing to make a stand against this horrible disease. Discussing her trip, Jennifer said, “Cathy and I had a wonderful time in Tanzania – the summit day was by far the most mentally challenging and physically exhausting thing we have ever undertaken but it was worth every bit of it when we stood at the top with our flag and took in the view. It would have been quite emotional but it was so cold we had to avoid crying through fear of the tears freezing to our cheeks.”
