Bob Charman, a mesothelioma victim in the UK, was exposed to asbestos and now suffers from the aggressive cancer. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma last year after a career spent working in the construction industry.
He can prove a clear link between his work history and exposure to asbestos. “We would saw it (asbestos products) and file it and the dust would fly around… you’d put a hanky round your face like a bandit. We didn’t have masks and respirators,” he told the BBC.
Although he can prove his workplace exposure, Charman cannot receive full compensation for his asbestos related diseases because he does not know the insurance company that covered his employer at the time of exposure.
Many mesothelioma victims in the UK have this same problem and can only receive government compensation because they cannot find the proper insurance documentation. Insurance asbestos claims pay much more than government ones do and better provide for the families of victims.
The previous government promised to force insurers to establish a collective fund to deal with claims such as these, but they have not been able to deliver on it because of opposition from the insurance industry. It has instead set up a tracing office to help victims with their claims.
