While it is no secret that those who work with asbestos fibers on a regular basis have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, the mesothelioma risk of those who live with asbestos workers is not as commonly discussed. With that in mind, it is all the more troubling when an innocent family member such as Annette Bhatti succumbs to the deadly asbestos disease.
Bhatti, who was 49-years-old at the time of her death, was exposed to asbestos on a regular basis when she used to welcome home her dad from work. Her father’s work at a shipyard in the UK regularly involved the cutting of asbestos sheets, and he would return home in the same clothes he had worn at the yard. According to her family, she was exposed to asbestos regularly until she left home at the age of 18.
In June 2010, only one month before her wedding to her husband, Bhatti was diagnosed with mesothelioma. She passed away from the deadly asbestos cancer in December 2011, according to The Mirror.
“[Annette’s father] blames himself. He is broken, totally devastated,” said her brother Stuart following an inquest into her death. Her father added that he was not aware of the dangers relating to asbestos when he would wear his dusty work clothes home.
While this unfortunate situation took place in the UK, there are many cases of secondhand asbestos exposure that have occurred in the United States that have resulted in similar mesothelioma diagnoses.
