Famous Philly Sculptor and Crime Fighter Battling Mesothelioma

If we told you there was a guy out there who takes human skulls, boils them to remove the flesh, then reconstructs them using his sculpting skills — you’d be pretty grossed out right? But Frank Bender was no creepy criminal.

This bizarre method of reconstructing faces mastered by the forensic sculptor has helped solved many a murder over the years. In fact, his work has become so helpful to the law enforcement community he was featured more than once on the TV show America’s Most Wanted.

But now Bender is in a battle to save his own life instead of finding those who’ve cruelly taken the lives of others. Diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma nearly a half-century after serving in the Navy, Bender has outlived doctor’s expectations and remains steadfast in the face of near-certain death.

“I just feel that we’re all gonna go someday. I’d rather go walking like I do now rather than when I’m some dried-up old prune using a walker,” he told the Philadelphia Daily News.

Of course, asbestos companies knew far before Mr. Bender stepped foot on a ship their product was harmful, yet chose to do nothing about the problem. We’re not sure if Frank has contacted a mesothelioma attorney about his diagnosis, but if you’ve been diagnosed make sure to call or fill out a form to inquire about possible compensation you could be entitled to as a way to cover medical costs and affecting your quality of life.
