Dr. Larry R. Kaiser is recognized around the world as “one of the outstanding thoracic oncologists having built one of the largest general thoracic services” in the U.S. He is The John Rhea Barton Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Dr. Kaiser is the Principal Investigator of the University of Pennsylvania Health System ’s grant from the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT). He is on the Executive Committee for this national trial and he also heads the Thoracic Oncology Research Laboratory at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to clinical expertise in Thoracic Oncology, mainly the treatment of malignant mesothelioma, Dr. Kaiser’s areas of clinical expertise also include lung cancer and mediastinal tumors.
Dr. Kaiser received his B.S. from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana . He received his M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana (1973-1977). He completed his General Surgery Residency from 1977-1983 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as well as his Fellow in Surgical Oncology from 1979-1981. Dr. Kaiser completed his Cardiovascular Surgery Residency at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada from 1983-1984 as well as his Thoracic Surgery Senior Residency (1984-1985).
Dr. Kaiser became a Surgeon at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), in New York, NY in 1985, where he remained until 1988. In 1988, he became a Faculty Member at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He remained at the Washington University School of Medicine until 1991, when he became a Faculty Member at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he remains today. Dr. Kaiser became Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2001.
Dr. Kaiser serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgery, the Annals of Surgical Oncology and Contemporary Surgery, and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has authored or co-authored nine books and over 300 papers including: the Atlas of General Thoracic Surgery, Mastery of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and The Surgical Review.
Dr. Kaiser is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) and he is a member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CSN). Dr. Kaiser is also a member of the General Thoracic Surgical Club (GTSC) and he is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
