The widow of a United Kingdom factory whose asbestos exposure ultimately led to his death has been served some degree of justice in the form of a sizable monetary settlement from the company that formerly worked for.
Marjorie Combe was recently awarded a £74,000 – or approximately $115,000 – payout from John Brown Engineering as compensation for the 2009 death of her late-husband, 69-year-old George Combe, whom the company had employed as an apprentice turner, The Shields Gazette reported.
George worked for John Brown at a factory on the River Clyde from 1956 to 1961. Roger Maddocks, an attorney who worked on the compensation case for Marjorie, said George had rarely worked directly with asbestos. However, he added that those in the company’s workshop were still exposed to “substantial levels” of airborne asbestos dust through the heating system, while doing work on asbestos-lagged equipment, or whenever they ventured to a shipyard at the factory.
As a result of the exposure, George’s respiratory conditions ultimately deteriorated. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma for months before his death in 2009.
“In a matter of months he went from a fit, healthy man, who was still able to work part-time and carry out jobs around the house, to receiving palliative care to help reduce his pain and to make him comfortable,” Marjorie told the Gazette.
Following George’s death, Marjorie and his two daughters began working with legal experts to pursue a mesothelioma settlement. Marjorie told the Gazette that receiving compensation helped bring some degree of justice to the situation.
“Although it will never bring George back, I am pleased they [have] been made to pay for what they have done to an innocent man who worked for the company,” she said.
