Britain’s only specialist construction union, UCATT, is fuming at the stance the British government has taken regarding medical research into asbestos-related disease. Exposure to asbestos can cause the rare and aggressive mesothelioma cancer.
A February comment from then Justice Secretary Jack Straw pleaded for Britain to “become a global leader in research” for the now incurable mesothelioma and to help establish a National Center for Asbestos Related Disease (NCARD), however current Health Minister Simon Burns avoided talking about Straw’s plans in a recent response on the issue. He stated that funding “into any aspect of human health are subject to peer review and judged in open competition”, but members of UCATT aren’t buying it.
They feel the current parliamentary stance has to do with the class of people typically affected by mesothelioma. UCATT general secretary Alan Ritchie went so far as to say, “If mesothelioma affected the rich, wealthy, and privileged the coalition would invest in research.”
UCATT has been pushing this agenda for quite some time as despite over 2,000 people a year dying from mesothelioma and the disease being the 12th most common killer of men, there is very little research into the disease. Read the full article for more information.
