A heartbreaking story out of England — 18-year-old Sophie Ellis has succumbed to mesothelioma. She is officially the only British teenager to contract the disease in thirty years, but is perhaps the most courageous and resolute of all victims.
When originally diagnosed, Sophie was given only months to live, however she extended that prognosis by nearly five years.
“She coped with her illness incredibly well,” said Sophie’s mother, Lynn, to the East Anglican Daily Times. “She fought so hard and we are so grateful to have spent that extra time with her. We knew from the beginning that her illness was terminal, but nothing prepares you for when the end comes. She packed more into her 18 years than some people do in a lifetime.”
Sophie’s family has chosen to support the Teenage Cancer Trust in her memory. Donations are welcome and can be sent c/o Andrew Bingham, Independent Funeral Service, 17 Charles Industrial Estate, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 5AH, or by calling 01449 771666.
Many of us here at Asbestos.net were moved by Sophie’s story and we’d like to send our condolences to her family. In addition, please support our fight to Ban Asbestos Now in the U.S. as a way to ensure we don’t keep reading stories like Sophie’s.
