Asbestos Awareness Group Honors Senator Max Baucus

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) announced that Max Baucus — a US Senator from Montana – will be awarded the “Tribute of Hope Award,” for his work to fight on behalf of asbestos exposure victims in his home state and around the nation. The ADAO will present the award to Baucus at the annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference, which takes place in Atlanta, GA on April 1-3.

Work at the W.R. Grace and Co. asbestos mine in Libiby, MT caused what the Environmental Protection Agency called a public health emergency. Asbestos exposure here has led to thousands of cases of asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, pleural plaques, asbestos-related lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive form of cancer that is almost always fatal. Baucus’s efforts in the Senate brought millions of dollars for cleanup and health care to those affected by asbestos exposure at the Libby mine.

“It’s an honor to receive this award. I’m humbled and grateful to the people of Libby for their courage and resilience in the face of this outrageous tragedy, and this award truly belongs to them,” Baucus said to The Western News.

“I’m also grateful to organizations like the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and folks in Montana and all over the country who’ve worked so hard to raise awareness and fight for the victims of asbestos exposure.”

“There’s nothing we can ever do to fully right the unimaginable wrong that took place in Libby,” Baucus said. “But I’m committed to the fight to make sure Libby gets the tools it needs to clean up this disaster and care for everyone who has suffered as a result.”

While in operation, the Grace mine produced approximately 80 percent of the world’s vermiculite. It was widely used in a brand of attic insulation known as Zonolite, and the United States government estimates that more than 35 million homes may still contain Zonolite or another asbestos vermiculite insulation.
