Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg is Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Health System-Presbyterian in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Friedberg is also Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
His clinical interests are in diseases of the pleura. Dr. Swanson has experience with laser treatments and photodynamic therapy. He performs Video Thoracoscopic procedures for the treatment of chest diseases. He has extensive experience and skill with open and minimally invasive approaches to cancer surgery.
Dr. Friedberg heads many investigational trials to develop treatments for advanced cancers and malignant mesothelioma, including the development of a lung cancer vaccine. In addition to his current positions, his research, and patient-care, Dr. Friedberg also directs the Penn Presbyterian Thoracic Research Laboratory. The laboratory is focused upon several areas of interest including both oncologic and nononcologic topics. He is Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery.
According to Penn Health, “Dr. Frideberg He maintains a special interest in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for endobronchial and advanced-stage lung cancer. He administers an active research laboratory with a primary focus on both oncologic and non-oncologic topics. Other projects include critical care, pulmonary fungal infections and pulmonary physics.”
Dr. Friedberg attended Harvard Medical School where he received his Medical Degree (M.D.). He completed his Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital as well. Dr. Friedberg completed his Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Friedberg is a member of The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the General Thoracic Club (GTS), the Massachusetts General Hospital Alumni Society, the Surgical Infection Society (SIS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) as well as the Society for Thoracic Surgery (STS), and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS).
Dr. Friedberg has been recognized by Philadelphia Magazine’s “Top Doctors” issue in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Just a few of his publishing credits include: Innovative therapies: photodynamic therapy, Thoracic Surgery Clinics; Phase II trial of pleural photodynamic therapy and surgery for patients with non-small-cell lung cancer with pleural spread, Journal of Clinical Oncology; A phase I study of Foscan-mediated photodynamic therapy and surgery in patients with mesothelioma, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Gene expression profiling of malignant mesothelioma, Clinical Cancer Research.
