Dr. Frank C. Detterbeck has been in the medical profession for nearly 20 years. He is Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Section of Thoracic Surgery, Surgical Director of Thoracic Oncology, and Associate Director for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. His specialty is General Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Detterbeck’s clinical interests include: thoracic oncology in the areas of: lung cancer, lung metastases, esophageal cancer, thymoma, mediastinal tumors, chest wall tumors, Pancoast tumors, mesothelioma, and sarcoma, and chest surgery including benign conditions, and minimally invasive surgery for thoracic procedures.

Dr. Detterbeck’s research interests are in the areas of cancer biology, cancer-imaging techniques, prognostic markers of cancers, multimodality (multiple therapies for) treatment of cancer, and evidence-based medicine.

Dr. Detterbeck completed his undergraduate studies in 1976 at the University of Michigan. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1983, after completing all requirements for his Medical Degree (M.D.). Dr. Detterbeck completed his Residency in General Surgery at the Virginia Mason Clinic in Seattle from 1983-1988. He completed his Residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, from 1988-1991. He continued at the University of North Carolina from 1991-1992, where he completed his Fellowship in Thoracic Transplantation.

Dr. Detterbeck became Board Certified in Surgery in 1990 and he became Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery in 1992 (re-certification in 2002). Dr. Detterbeck has a long list of memberships and he currently serves on several committees. He belongs to the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CSN), and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS). He is also a member of the General Thoracic Surgical Club (GTSC), and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS), as well as the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA), and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

Dr. Detterbeck is the editor of a major textbook on Lung Cancer, The Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer: An Evidence-Based Guide for the Practicing Clinician, and he has also published more than 100 original articles, chapters, and reviews. Since the year 2000, Dr. Detterbeck has averaged more than one new publication per month. In addition, Dr. Detterbeck is listed in the America’s Top Doctors for Cancer guide by Castle Connelly (2005), Who’s Who in America (2005), and in the Guide to America’s Top Physicians Consumers’ Research Council of America (2003). Dr. Detterbeck speaks fluent German.
