University of Washington Medical Center’s Cancer Care Center is part of the University of Washington Health System and UW Medicine. UW Medicine owns and operates Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center, University of Washington School of Medicine, UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics, and UW Physicians.

UW Medicine also shares in the ownership and governance of Seattle Children’s University Medical Group and Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). SCCA is made up of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine, and Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center to create the only federally designated comprehensive cancer center in the Northwest.

UW Medicine has an extensive list of accomplishments and awards. It ranks first among public medical schools and second among all medical schools in federal research funding. UW Medicine received $579.7 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research awards in 2007 alone. The UW Medicine faculty includes 18 Howard Hughes Medicine Institute Investigators, 32 Institute of Medicine members, 30 National Academy of Science Members, and an impressive 5 Nobel Prize winners.

The University of Washington Medical Center has approximately 15,600 employees and it ranks 11th among America ‘s best hospitals in U.S. News & World Report’s 2007 honor roll. UW Medicine physicians admit 37,000 patients a year to UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, and its clinics and emergency rooms have approximately 1 million patient visits per year.

And finally, UW Medicine is renowned for its programs in solid organ transplantation, heart-care, high-risk pregnancy and neonatal intensive care, rehabilitation, specialized orthopaedic surgery, and cancer treatment. Cancer care services at University of Washington Medical Center ranked 11th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2005.UW Medicine joins with Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center working with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in providing oncology care for patients of all ages through the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

The UWMC Cancer Care Center and SCCA treat all types of lung cancers and mesothelioma, head and neck cancer, lymphoma, neuro-oncology, oncology pain, liver cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, endocrine neoplasia, pediatric oncology, prostate and genitourinary oncology, and sarcoma. The UWMC Cancer Care Center provides specialized radiation treatments and therapies including: Coronary artery brachytherapy, conformal radiation therapy, CT simulation, fast neutron radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), interstitial brachytherapy, interstitial breast brachytherapy, interoperative radiotherapy, organ preservation therapy, pediatric radiation oncology, prostate cancer radiation, radiation for lymphoma, stereotactic radiosurgery, tandem and ring HDR, and vaginal cylinder HDR brachytherapy.
