Toledo Community Hospital Oncology Program, a Clinical Community Oncology Program, is sponsored by the National Cancer Research Institutes. A Clinical Community Oncology Program (CCOP) is a consortium of community hospitals and physicians funded by a peer reviewed cooperative agreement to participate in National Cancer Research Institutes (NCI) sponsored clinical trials, testing cancer treatments, cancer prevention studies, and control studies on treatment morbidities. To date, NCI has founded 62 Clinical Community Oncology Programs (CCOPs) and roughly 50 NCI Clinical Community Oncology Programs are operational today.

Toledo Community Hospital Oncology Program (TCHOP) is one of the original 27 clinical research programs sponsored by the NCI. TCHOP includes 13 institutions and six private oncology offices. TCHOP institutions and oncology offices are located throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

Led by principal investigator, Dr. Paul Schaefer, TCHOP has a regional institution review board which monitors cancer research protocols at all participating hospitals and clinics. The TCHOP review board is made up of roughly 49 participating physicians from thoracic surgery, general surgery, medical and radiation oncology, pathology, and urology play an active role, as well as 90 allied health professionals including oncology nurses and clinical research assistants. The review board accrues more than 100 patients annually on treatment related to cancer research trials.

Nearly 20 years ago, TCHOP became a primary member of several notable groups including: Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG) with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) as secondary research bases.

Additionally, Toledo Community Hospital Oncology Program physicians have been named as authors on dozens of peer reviewed published manuscripts and Dr. Schaefer was Chair of the Executive Committee of the North Central Cancer Treatment Group from 1999 to 2003.

Many of Toledo Community Hospital Oncology Program’s top physicians have served as chair of numerous protocols and they have also served as chair of notable groups such as the North Central Cancer Treatment Group Surgery Committee, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Economic Impact Committee, and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Quality of Life Committee.
