St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is a member of Trinity Health, the fourth largest Catholic health care system in the United States. Located in Pontiac, Michigan, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has been a leader in health care in Oakland County for more than 75 years. SJMO is a 428-bed comprehensive community hospital that has recently added the new Robert Gustafson Wing – increasing the size of the hospital by more than 120,000-square-feet. The new wing includes a retail pharmacy, a new emergency center, a private patient tower, and an imaging center.
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is ranked in the top five percent of hospitals across the U.S for clinical excellence and it has a position in the top 100 cardiovascular programs in the U.S. Additionally, SJMO has been a full-service cancer center since 1990. Mercy Cancer Care, as it is known, received recognition as a cancer center by the American College of Surgeons in 1997. It received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons as a “Teaching Hospital Cancer Program.” This category is shared with larger institutions in Southeastern Michigan. It is estimated that only 39 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the U.S. exceed the requirements of Teaching Hospital Programs.
Made up of a group of top physicians from the departments of medicine, surgery, radiology, radiation oncology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and gynecology, the Mercy Cancer Care Cancer Committee manages all initiatives and areas of the SJMO cancer program. The Cancer Committee also includes staff from the department of pharmacy, nursing staff representing various areas of cancer care and education, and a certified cancer registrar.
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Mercy Cancer Care features a dedicated Inpatient Unit, and 30 large private rooms. All RN cancer care managers are chemotherapy certified and 45 percent of all program nurses are Oncology Certified. In addition, Mercy Cancer Care offers daily multidisciplinary rounds for each patient, including nutrition, pharmacy, and social work along with the nursing staff and physicians.
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Mercy Cancer Care also features an Outpatient Infusion Center for gynecological oncology, pediatric hematology/oncology and general adult hematology and oncology care; a Radiation Treatment Center (MIRO) offering numerous radiation therapies; Cancer Research (clinical trials); Breast Health Services; Mercy Supportive Care, and a Certified Cancer Registry, which has a database of more than 12,000 cases to help monitor cancer trends and treatment, and it coordinates breast, general, gynecology, and lung multidisciplinary tumor boards.
