Ranked in the top 20 percent of hospitals in New Jersey in the number of cardiac procedures performed, Somerset Medical Center is a nationally accredited regional medical center with a 650-member medical and dental staff. As a major clinical affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of the New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), Somerset Medical Center operates the family medicine resident program, hosting residents from RWJMS that specialize in psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, and other specialties. The 650member staff of Somerset Medical Center represents all major surgical and medical specialties.
Somerset Medical Center has the highest percentages of board-certified doctors in the state of New Jersey, it has been chosen to serve as a Medical Coordination Center for the Central West region (one of only nine hospitals selected for this designation.), and in 2005 Somerset Medical Center was named a Performance Improvement Leader by “Thomson 100 Top Hospitals” and one of the 25 “Most Improved Hospitals” in information technology in the nation by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.
In January 2007, Somerset Medical Center added another member to its team of professionals – the $25 million Steeplechase Cancer Center. Named in honor of the Far Hills Race Meeting, one of the nation’s most prestigious steeplechase races (and responsible for raising more than $17 million for Somerset Medical Center), the three-story, 63,000-square-foot facility features the latest technologies to treat cancer.
The Steeplechase Cancer Center provided comprehensive cancer treatment to patients in the region as well as well as from all around the nation.
The Steeplechase Cancer Center has a multidisciplinary team made up of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, breast care specialists, certified oncology nurses, social workers, case managers, nutritionists, pharmacists, and pastoral care staff. In addition to mesothelioma (pleura) and lung cancer, these cancer care specialists treat all kinds of cancer including: astrocytoma, bladder cancer, basal cell carcinoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, adult non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, throat cancer, thyroid cancer, and tongue cancer, to name a few.
The Steeplechase Cancer Center’s services include: state-of-the-art radiation oncology services, the Sanofi-Aventis Breast Care Program, a resource center for patients and their families, and complementary medicine programs.
Steeplechase Cancer Center is a clinical research affiliate of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and it is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
