The Saint Louis University Cancer Center’s mission is to provide the “highest standard of care through superior scientific and therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment of cancer,” through research, education, patient care, community outreach, and service. The Saint Louis University Cancer Center (SLU) is an American College of Surgeons (ACOS) and Commission on Cancer (COC) accredited cancer center.
The Saint Louis University (SLU) Cancer Center has a long list of specialists and medical experts in the areas of medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, immunotherapy, cancer research, clinical trials, cancer prevention and education, genetic counseling, and testing & research, as well as alternative medicine, nutrition services, hospice and pain management, spiritual care, professional counseling, and social services.
The Saint Louis University Cancer Center offers the latest cancer care treatments in a state-of-the-art facility that occupies 50,000 square feet of space in Saint Louis University Hospital’s West Pavilion. The Saint Louis Cancer Center is partnership between Saint Louis University and Saint Louis University Hospital. The SLU Cancer Center features sophisticated screening and diagnostic tools designed to detect cancer including: genetic counseling, an advanced Breast Imaging Center, an endoscopy suite, computed tomography scans, positron emission tomography, and MRI.
Cancer patients at the SLU Cancer Center may be seen by internal medical specialists including gastroenterologists, hematologists/oncologists, hepatologists, dermatologists, and pulmonologists. In addition to thoracic surgery, SLU Cancer Center surgical oncologists are specialists in general surgery, breast surgery, colorectal surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, urology, orthopedic, and neurosurgery.
In addition to lung cancer and thoracic cancer, cancer specialists at the SLU Cancer Center also treat cancers of the head and neck (including thyroid), the blood (leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndrome), breast cancer, brain cancer, cancers of the digestive system (colorectal, liver and pancreas), cancers of the urological system (kidney, urinary/bladder), and cancers of the musculoskeletal system as well as skin cancer (melanoma). SLU Cancer Center also treats prostate cancer and testicular cancer as well as gynecological cancers such as cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer.
If needed, SLU Cancer Center patients may receive genetic counseling, as well as pastoral care and hospice care assistance from social workers. Genetic counseling, pastoral care, hospice care assistance, surgery, and interventional radiology are provided at the SLU Cancer Center or the Saint Louis University Hospital. Both Saint Louis University Hospital and Saint Louis University Cancer Center are accessible through a bridge that connects the two facilities.
