“In 1939, Dr. Alton Ochsner discovered the link between tobacco and lung cancer. He continued his legacy in 1942 when he, along with four physicians, established Ochsner, the first multi-specialty group practice in the South.” The Ochsner Health System is a nonprofit, academic, multi-specialty, healthcare delivery system consisting of more than 8,000 employees, including 600 physicians in 80 medical specialties and subspecialties. Ochsner also consists of seven hospitals and a sub-acute facility as well as 33 neighborhood health centers throughout the state of Louisiana. Ochsner Health System conducts 700 ongoing clinical research trials each year, and it is the only Gulf South, Medicare-approved transplant center for heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas.
Ochsner Health System was named in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals”; it was named to the American Hospital Association’s “Most Wired” list for four years in a row in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, and it was named AARP’s “Best Place to Work” three years in a row in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2005 and 2006, Ochsner Health System was ranked, “The Best Place to Work in New Orleans,” by New Orleans City Business and it is currently the only cancer facility in Louisiana included in Good Housekeeping Magazine’s list of the outstanding cancer treatment centers in the U.S.
Ochsner Cancer Institute at Ochsner Clinic Foundation affiliations include: The Association of Community Cancer Centers, the Children’s Oncology Group, and the Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP)-Ochsner. The Community Clinical Oncology Program CCOP-Ochsner affiliations include: Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, North Center Cancer Treatment Group, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. CCOP-Ochsner is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded Community Clinical Oncology Program.
