The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is comprised of clinical, research, educational, and administrative departments spread out over several UCSF locations and several affiliated hospitals. UCSF locations include: UCSF Parnassus, San Francisco General Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and UCSF Mount Zion Medical Center. UCSF’s affiliated hospitals include: California Pacific Medical Center, Children’s Hospital-Oakland, and Natividad Medical Center-Salinas.
The University of California, San Francisco Mt. Zion Medical Center — Urologic Oncology, Comprehensive Cancer Center houses several departments dedicated to urologic oncology including surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, clinical trials, G-CEPS, and academic offices, as well as the UCSF Department of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. David Jablons is Chief of Thoracic Surgery.
The General Thoracic Surgery Program is currently (closely) modeled after programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, New York, and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The program also utilizes elements from the cancer program at Toronto Hospital in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
The University of California , San Francisco General Thoracic Surgery Program is not just one section — it encompasses all hospitals within the UCSF system. These hospitals include all Moffitt-Long Hospitals, San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion, and San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center.
The urological surgery section of Mt. Zion Medical Center CCC is home to five surgeons including Drs. Peter Carroll, Kirsten Greene, Badrinath Konety, Maxwell Meng, and Dr. Katsuto Shinohara. The urological medical oncology section has five doctors on staff as well including Drs. Lawrence Fong, Amy Lin, Jonathan Rosenberg, Charles Ryan, and Dr. Eric Small. The urological radiation oncology section has four doctors on staff including Alexander Gottschalk, MD, PhD, I-Chow Joe Hsu, Mack Roach III, and Dr. Joycelyn Speight. Mt. Zion Medical Center CCC, has roughly a dozen key staff members including additional oncologists, dietitians, nurses, and practice managers.
The University of California , San Francisco Medical Center , Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center treats all kinds of adult and pediatric cancers. The center highlights basic scientific research, clinical research, patient care, and population science. The UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center features a Thoracic Oncology Program made up of a team of 20 member-investigators focusing on the management of pleural tumors, includingmesothelioma, and thoracic malignancies such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and chest wall and mediastinal tumors.
A current research initiative of the Thoracic Oncology Program is “mechanisms of asbestos-induced carcinogens and apoptosis in mesothelioma.”
