The Department of Hematology and Oncology (Geisinger Medical Group State College) is a part of Geisinger Health Systems and Geisinger Health Systems Cancer Institute. Geisinger Health Systems serves more than 2.5 million people in 40 counties. Founded in 1915, Geisinger Health System is a physician-led health care system, dedicated to health care, education, research, and service.
The Geisinger Health Systems Cancer Institute is also made up of the Geisinger Medical Center and the Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley , Wilkes-Barre , PA. Geisinger Medical Group, State College offers consultation, diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic conditions, while the Geisinger Medical Center focuses on effective screening, prevention, and detection through diagnosis and state-of-the-art treatment for cancer patients residing in Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The third component of the Gesinger Health System’s Cancer Institute, The Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley , Wilkes-Barre , is a partnership between Geisinger and Fox Chase Cancer Center . The two centers work together to “develop cancer prevention strategies, cultivate cancer research, enhance diagnostic techniques and to provide access to advanced treatment, clinical trials and research” for cancer patients in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Geisinger Health Systems Cancer Institute offers services in all areas cancer treatment including thoracic oncology, head and neck oncology, gastrointestinal malignancies, adult and pediatric hematology/oncology, genitourinary, radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology, specialized diagnostic and surgical services, bone and soft tissue (musculo-skeletal) tumors, melanoma/skin cancer, brain and spinal cord/cranial base tumors, breast cancer, dental, and skin cancer prevention.
For inpatients, the oncology unit’s staff takes a holistic approach to cancer treatment. The multidisciplinary team of oncologists, oncology nurses, physician assistants, chaplains, pharmacists, discharge planners, oncology counselors, dietitians, and nutritional support staff combines advanced technology with sensitivity and compassion to provide holistic care to cancer patients.
The Cancer Institute’s outpatient team of specialists provides comprehensive treatment and support services for patients and families along with treatment services including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, ambulatory infusion services, nutritional support, and a health psychology support and resource center. Other major treatments and services include: comprehensive evaluation and treatment of hematologic malignancies including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and multiple myeloma, low-dose and high-dose brachytherapy, internal radiation therapy using an implant of radioactive material placed directly into or near the tumor, CT and MRI imaging, CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Geisinger Health Systems Cancer Institute also offers hematology/oncology, oncology, oncologic surgery, pediatric hematology/oncology and surgical oncology trials.
