Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University is part of Part of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is home to some of the nations top doctors, according to “Best Doctors in America” 2007 and “America’s Top Doctors” lists. Wake Forest Baptist was also listed as one of America’s best hospitals in U.S. News & World Report 2007, it has won the Consumer Choice Award, and Good Housekeeping ranked it among “44 Top Cardiac Centers for Women” in America.

Ten Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University physicians were named in the 2007 edition of Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors for Cancer.’ They are: Dr. Bayard L. Powell, Hematology; Dr. David Hurd, Medical Oncology; Dr. Glenn J. Lesser, Medical Oncology; Dr. Frank Torti, Medical Oncology; Dr. Stephen Tatter, Neurological Surgery; Dr. Samuel S. Lentz, Gynecologic Oncology; Dr. William G. Ward, Orthopaedic Surgery; Dr. Richard Rauck, Pain Medicine; Dr. Edward G. Shaw, Radiation Oncology, and Dr. Edward A. Levine, Surgery.

Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University is a National Cancer Institute Designated Comprehensive Cancer Institute. The Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only 39 U.S Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as Comprehensive, and it is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in western North Carolina . This designation indicates excellence in research, patient care, and education.

The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University has more than 120 clinicians specializing in just about every area and all aspects of cancer. It also offers more than 200 cancer-related clinical trials. While the cancer center treats all types of cancer, its areas of special focus are lung cancer treatment, abdominal cancer, brain cancer treatment, breast cancer, and brain cancer Brachytherapy.

The multidisciplinary thoracic oncology clinic at Wake Forest Baptist offers the latest options for patients with malignancies of the chest, including carcinoid tumor, thymoma, as well as pioneering mesothelioma treatment plans. Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University is the only cancer center in the state of North Carolina to offer extracranial stereotactic body radiosurgery – the equivalent of six weeks of radiation therapy delivered in just two weeks, and the center’s thoracic oncology program is actively involved in all aspects of lung cancer treatment ranging from innovative treatments to research to teaching. In fact, two Wake Forest research projects were named top breakthroughs of the year by Discover Magazine, Popular Science, and Popular Mechanics.
