Asbestos in Schools
In MORRISVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, school was closed on February 10 and 11 for students at Morrisville Middle/High School.
In the overnight hours before February 10, 2009, a contractor working on the electrical wiring of the school spotted a suspicious material. He informed the district as soon as people reported for work in the morning that he suspected he had found asbestos at the school.
The Morrisville school district acted quickly to have the air quality tested of the school. The test results were returned to the district at 11:15 a.m. the same morning as the report. One hour later, students and staff were sent home, but the test results were not immediately made known. Parents were told that they would be contacted by telephone when the test results were finalized. The school cleaned out the area, and it was declared safe for students to return after February 11, 2009.
In READING, PENNSYLVANIA, asbestos found in the Oley Valley High School auxiliary gymnasium will have to be removed at a cost of $36,000.
The removal began immediately after school let out on Thursday, February 12, 2009, and was scheduled to continue through the end of the holiday on Monday, February 16, 2009.
The asbestos found in the gym was located in the glue that was used to adhere the gym floor to the subflooring. Despite not finding any problems with the air quality from the asbestos in the glue, it was still removed to prevent future problems. Since the discovery of the asbestos, the auxiliary gymnasium was closed.
The removal of the asbestos from the gym was a part of the overall $993,000 project to renovate the floors and seating in both the auxiliary gym and the main gym. The district did not know if asbestos was present in the floor glue of the main gym, built prior to the auxiliary gym, until its renovations began.
