Former U.S. Navy Workers File Asbestos Lawsuits

Several former U.S. Navy Workers have filed and asbestos lawsuit disputing the claimthey recieved is inadequate because of discriminatory practices of the trust they are dealing with.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the workers - who hail from Greece, England, and Malta - claim they contracted asbestos-related diseases from working on active duty warships docked in their countries as well as other places such as Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. They say that their illnesses are a result of asbestos exposure in Johns Manville products found in the ships’ engine rooms, boiler rooms, and other confined areas. Many died from their illnesses such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and gastrointestinal cancer.

Their asbestos lawsuits claim that the trust responsible for compensating after their diagnosis is discriminating against them because they are not American. The workers claim the trust incorrectly concluded that their illnesses were derived from asbestos exposure that occurred off of U.S. land, and therefore deems their claims as “non-standard” and affects the compensation they can receive.

The former Navy workets want the bankruptcy court to declare their claims as standard instead of non-standard so that they will receive the proper compensation.
