Logan Morrison Honors Father with Lung Cancer Benefit

When he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer last April, Tom Morrison’s only wish was to see his son Logan get his first big league hit. Before the elder Morrison passed in December 2010 at age 51, he got his wish. Logan Morrison was drafted by the Florida Marlins and got his first hit while his father looked on.

Now the Marlins’ Outfielder is honoring his father by helping raise money to find a cure for the devastating and widespread disease. On January 8 and 9, Morrison is holding a baseball clinic for kids 8-18 at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. The “LoMo Camp for a Cure,” event features two days of baseball instruction, signed autographs and other goodies for $250 per child – with all funds going directly to the American Lung Association. But Morrison’s dedication to the cause doesn’t end here. On his Twitter page, Morrison promised to drive anywhere in southern Florida to pick up donations – as long as the amount was generous to cover the cost of gas.

While Tom Morrison never smoked, his parents did, exposing their child to dangerous second-hand smoke. Morrison also helped his father tear out asbestos-covered blast furnaces. It’s estimated that about one in four cases of lung cancer can be linked to asbestos exposure.
Lung cancer is the largest cancer killer in the world – affecting more victims than all other forms combined.
