Dr. Robert James Cerfolio has been in the medical profession for more than 20 years. He is a board certified General Thoracic Surgeon. Dr. Cerfolio is known by his colleagues as one of the busiest and best thoracic surgeons in the world. In 1999 alone he performed more than 800 operations for disorders of the esophagus, lungs, mediastinum, and trachea. He has held this record yearly ever since. In addition to his position as Thoracic Surgeon at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Cerfolio is also Chief and Director of Thoracic Surgery for Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital and on the Medical Leadership Committee.
Dr. Cerfolio’s clinical interests are lung cancer, esophageal surgery, tracheal surgery, repair of bronchopleural fistula, Video Assisted Thoroscopy (VAT), chest wall resection and reconstruction, and meidastinal masses. Dr. Cerfolio is a collaborator in research to develop gene therapies for esophageal cancer.
Dr. Cerfolio completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester . He received his B.A. in 1984. He received his Medical Degree (M.D.) in 1988, also from the University of Rochester. He completed his Internship in General Surgery from 1988-1990 at Hartford Hospital/St. Francis. He completed his Residency in Urology from 1990-1991 at Cornell-New York Hospital, Sloan Kettering. From 1991-1993, Dr. Cerfolio completed his General Surgery Residency at the Mayo Clinic and his Cardiothoracic Fellowship, from 1993-1996, also at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Cerfolio has been Voted one of America ’s “Best Doctors” by his peers, and was recognized by heavy-hitters in the medical field as one of the best thoracic surgeons in the world for three consecutive years in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He has presented scores of lectures and courses for a wide variety of societies such as The American College Of Surgeons (ACS), The American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS), and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
In addition to performing surgeries, researching, teaching, and reviewing and editing journal articles, Cerfolio has also presented more than 20 papers, both nationally and internationally, on new techniques and results in thoracic surgery.
Dr. Cerfolio is a member of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), The Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CSN), The General Thoracic Surgical Club (GTSC), The Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA), and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). He also serves on quite a few committees including: Continuing Medical Education (STSA), Postgraduate Program (STSA), Evidence Based Surgery (STS), and the STS University Task Force.
