Dr. David Park Mason is a Staff Thoracic Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He was appointed to the position in 2004. In addition to Malignant Mesothelioma, specifically, the multimodality management of malignant mesothelioma, Dr. Mason’s interests include: general thoracic surgery, minimally invasive thoracoscopic and laparaoscopic surgery (with video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) lobectomy for lung cancer as well as esophageal cancer), and imunosuppression. Dr. Mason performs thoracoscopic lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for emphysema and lung transplantation. Dr. Mason also has extensive experience in the area of extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Dr. Mason received his A.B. from Harvard College in Cambridge Massachusetts, in 1988. He was a major in Psychology and Social Relations, and graduated Cum Laude in General Studies. Dr. Mason went on to earn his medical degree from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York , NY in 1994. Dr. Mason began his Internship in General Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston Massachusetts in 1994. He completed his Internship in 1995 and immediately started his Residence in General Surgery, also at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Two years later, in 1997, Dr. Mason completed his Residency and became a Senior Vascular Surgery Fellow at the University of Washington from 1997-1999. His research training included studying mechanisms of cellular movement and invasion.

Dr. Mason returned to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston in 1999, where he completed his Resident in General Surgery from 1999-2001. He continued on at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a Fellow in Thoracic Surgery from 2001-2003, with a special focus on thoracic oncology. Shortly after completing his Fellowship, that same year, 2003, Dr. Mason was appointed Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland . While he was an Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery at The John Hopkins University School of Medicine, he was also an Attending Surgeon at both Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery until 2004, when became Staff Thoracic Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Mason’s board certifications include: General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He is also a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). Dr. Mason has authored or coauthored numerous book chapters and articles on thoracic oncology and cardiovascular disease.
