Dr. David L. Bartlett is Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Surgery. He is also the Director of the David C. Koch Regional Perfusion Cancer Therapy Center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. In February 2006, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine named Dr. Bartlett its inaugural Dr. Bernard Fisher Professor of Surgery. He specializes in the management of advanced, complex abdominal malignancies. His research interests include treating advanced carcinomas in the peritoneal cavity -- this includes peritoneal mesothelioma.

Dr. Bartlett was born November 5, 1961 in Ann Arbor, Michigan . He attended Rice University in Houston, Texas from 1979-1983 where he earned his B.A. degree as a Roy Scholar. From 1983-1987, Dr. Bartlett attended the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Texas , where he earned his Medical Degree. While at the University of Texas Medical School, he received the Sansoz Award for Academic Achievement.

Dr. Bartlett was a Surgery Resident, under Dr. Clyde F. Barker, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, from 1987-1993. He completed his Surgery Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Surgical Cancer Center in New York, NY from 1993-1995. Dr. Bartlett’s Research Fellowships include: M.D. Anderson Hospital, Department of Developmental Therapeutics, Houston, Texas (1984-1987) and the Department of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Harrison Department of Surgical Research (NIH Research Fellowship 1989-1991).

He completed several clinical fellowships from 1993-1995 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY . From 1993-1995, he completed his Surgical Oncology Fellowship and he received the American Cancer Society Award as a Clinical Oncology Fellow (1994-1995). In 1994, he also received his specialty certification from the American Board of Surgeons.

From 1995-1996, Dr. Bartlett was a special expert at the National Cancer Institute Surgery Branch. He became a Senior Investigator at the National Cancer Surgery Branch in 1996 and an Assistant Professor at the University of Health Services Uniformed Services. Both positions lasted five years (1996-2001) until Dr. Bartlett became a Visiting Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Surgery. In 2005, Dr. Bartlett went from Visiting Associate Professor to Professor of Surgery.

Dr. Bartlett belongs to numerous professional and scientific societies such as the American Medical Association (AMA), the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), and the American Society of Gene Therapy (ASGT), to name a few.
