The David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) was named in 2002 after Mr. David Geffen announced a $200 million unrestricted endowment for the school. Today, the medical school has more than 2,000 full-time faculty members, nearly 1,300 residents, over 750 medical students, and roughly 400 Ph.D. candidates. The U.S. News and World Report's annual survey of the best hospitals in America has ranked the UCLA Medical Center as "Best in the West" for fourteen consecutive years. The medical school is ranked third in the U.S. in research dollars from all sources, and ninth in the country in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA houses several centers and programs for cancer and lung diseases such as UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center and UCLA Lung Center of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center has been designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This means, that it not only focuses on basic science research and clinical (patient-oriented) research, but it also focuses on control, prevention, and population sciences. Comprehensive centers also serve their communities and regions, through education, information activities, and outreach. Comprehensive status is the highest possible ranking by the National Cancer Institute.
Jonsson Cancer Center houses more than a dozen divisions including: gastrointestinal oncology, genitourinary oncology, geriatric oncology, gynecologic oncology, head and neck oncology, hematology oncology, liver cancer center, neuro-oncology, ophthalmic oncology, orthopaedic oncology, pediatric oncology, psychosocial and preventive oncology, radiation oncology, skin cancer, surgical oncology, and the UCLA Pain Management Center .
The UCLA Lung Center offers continuing care for patients with all respiratory disorders. These disorders include: asthma, chronic and acute bronchitis, interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, pulmonary vascular disease, and sleep-disordered breathing. Consultation and continuing care are also available for critically ill patients, and patients with pulmonary disease requiring rehabilitation, as well as preoperative evaluations and comprehensive pulmonary function testing.
The clinical programs at the UCLA Lung Center of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine include: The Asthma & Cough Center, The Chronic Obstructive The Pulmonary Disease Center, Critical Care Service, The Interstitial Lung Disease Center, the Lung Transplant Program, the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, the Exercise Physiology Laboratory, The Pulmonary Hypertension Program, and The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, as well as Sleep Disorders, Pediatric Pulmonary Disorders, and The Smoking Cessation Program.
