Dr. Jack A. Elias is considered a leading authority on the molecular basis of asthma and other lung disorders. He is currently Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. As Chair, Dr. Elias leads the University's largest department, which includes 351 full-time faculty members, $45 million in clinical activity, and $83 million in research funding. He is also Waldemar Von Zedwitz Professor of Medicine Chief, Beeson Medical Service, at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH).

Dr. Elias’s clinical interests include: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute lung injury, and interstitial lung disease. His research interests include: His research interests include: Cellular and Molecular Pathogenesis of Asthma and COPD; Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Lung Injury, Repair and Remodeling; Transgenic Modeling of pulmonary diseases and disorders; Effector mechanisms of IL-13, VEGF, and TGF-beta type cytokines in the lung, and Effector mechanisms of Th2 and Th1 cytokines in the lung. He currently has seven patents or pending patents based on his research.

Dr. Elias attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he received his undergraduate degree. He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia where he received his Medical Degree (M.D.) Dr. Elias completed his Internship at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He also completed his Residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and his Senior Residency. Dr. Elias completed his Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as well as his Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Elias began his professional medical career at Yale University School of Medicine in 1990. He is board certified in internal medicine, and pulmonary disease, as well as allergy and immunology, and critical care medicine. To date, Dr. Elias has trained more than 50 investigators during his nearly 20 years at Yale University School of Medicine, he has held more than a dozen posts for the American Thoracic Society/American Lung Association, and he is also a participant in strategic planning for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Dr. Elias has authored more than 160 original journal articles, and 200 abstracts, and he is co-editor of the textbook Fishman’s Pulmonary Diseases and Disorders.

Dr. Elias has been a member of the Association of American Physicians (AAP) since 1998 and a councilor since 2003.
