Dr. Graeme L. Hammond is a Professor with the Department of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. His surgical specialty is Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Hammond’s Research Interest is MHC (major histocompatibility complex) suppression and his Clinical Interest is Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Hammond served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He attended Denison University in Granville , Ohio , where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958. Dr. Hammond attended McGill University , Faculty of Medicine in Montreal , Canada where he was awarded his Medical Degree (M.D.) in 1962. He completed his Intern in Surgery at Royal Victoria Hospital from 1962-1963. Dr. Hammond completed his Resident in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1963-1965 and his Clinical/Research Fellow in Surgery from 1965-1966, also at Massachusetts General Hospital . Dr. Hammond also completed his U.S. Public Health Service Fellowship (MGH) from 1965-1966. He completed another Resident in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1966-1968.
Dr. Hammond held a position at South Hampton Hospital from July 1968-December 1968. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine in 1969. He remained in this position until 1972. In 1972, Dr. Hammond became Associate Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine where he remained until 1979. At the time, he was also honored as an Established Investigator with the American Heart Association (1972-1976). Dr. Hammond was appointed to the position of Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine in 1979. During this time he received also his Honorary Master of Arts from Yale University (1979).
From 1981-1982, Dr. Hammond was Visiting Research Scientist in the Department of Biochemistry (Hormone Research Library) at the University of California in San Francisco. He was also Visiting Research Scientist in the Section of Immunobiology at Yale University School of Medicine from 1996-1997. Dr. Hammond's University Appointments include: Attending Surgeon, Yale-New Haven Hospital, 1969-present; Attending Surgeon, West Haven VA Medical Center, 1969-1987 and 1994-present, and Member, Yale Cancer Center, 1993-present. He has been a Visiting Professor at Istanbul School of Medicine Teaching Hospital at the University of Istanbul, Istanbul Turkey; Brown University-Miriam Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island; North Carolina State University Department of Veterinary Medicine in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Russian Medical Military Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, to name a few.
Dr. Hammond received his American Board of Surgery Certification in 1970 and his American Board of Thoracic Surgery Certification in 1971.
