Peritoneum
The
peritoneum is the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity, covering most of the abdominal organs. It is composed of two parts: the visceral and parietal peritoneum. The visceral peritoneum covers the abdominal organs, while the periteal layer lines the abdominal wall. Mesothelial cells in the peritoneum secrete a small amount of fluid that acts as lubrication, allowing the organs to smoothly move against one another (1, 2).
