Appellate

This is the adjectival form of the word "appeal," and refers to the courts, the judges and the process of appeals.

If you are party to a lawsuit - particularly one involving an individual (or group of individuals) against a business entity or corporation - an appeal is almost guaranteed. Either the individual or group, who is generally the plaintiff, will seek damages or compensation that was denied by a lower court, or the corporation, usually the defendant, will try to have the award reduced substantially, or even denied (dismissed) altogether. When an appeal is filed, the new trial is conducted in an appellate court. Judges who regularly hear appeals are known as appellate judges.
