The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center’s mission is “to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality through the translation of research into prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.” Located on the medical campus of the University of Maryland at Baltimore, the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC), houses a skilled team of cancer specialist including researchers and clinicians from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Because UMGCC is an academic cancer center, it employs more than 160 clinical investigators and scientists. UMGCC’s team of cancer experts collaborates on the treatment, prevention, and detection of cancer. These investigators and researchers conduct clinical trials, which give patients access to the latest cancer treatments before that become available to the general public.
University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center highlights include: $40 Million in research funding; a solid Translational Research Program -- from Lab Bench to Patient Bedside; a multidisciplinary approach to patient care; targeted, minimally invasive therapies; patient-focused outpatient Pavilion with Infusion Center and Chemotherapy Pharmacy; specialized inpatient facilities, including a Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Unit, and a full-time Patient Navigator.
UMGCC offers a Thoracic Oncology Program specializing in the treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, malignant mesothelioma, and metastatic cancers to the chest. The Thoracic Oncology Program consists of a thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, thoracic radiology, gastroenterology, and pulmonary medicine division. The Thoracic Oncology multidisciplinary team is made up of surgeons, thoracic radiologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, and social workers. The team of specialists offers treatment options including medical, surgical, and radiation therapies. In most cases a combination of all therapies is the best approach as it is proven to improve cure rates and reduce side effects in patients.
The Thoracic Oncology Program’s team of 11 specialists is made up a of a diverse group of some of the areas top cancer specialists. The team includes: Dr. Richard J. Battafarano (Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery); Dr. Martin Edelman (thoracic malignancies, bladder cancer); Dr. Peter F. Hausner (mesothelioma, lung cancer, thymoma, esophageal), Dr. Heather D. Manuel (medical oncology, genitourinary cancer); Dr. Whitney Burrows (thoracic surgery); Dr. Anil A. Shople (lung cancer, esophageal cancer); Dr. Mohan Suntha (thoracic oncology, head and neck cancer); Dr. Charles White (thoracic imaging); Dr. Robert Pugatch (thoracic imaging); Dr. Bruce D. Greenwald (esophageal cancer), and Dr. E. James Britt (diagnostic pulmonary medicine, bronchoscopy).
