Fox Chase Cancer Center is the number one cancer center in Pennsylvania and it ranks 11th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report (2007). Fox Chase Cancer Center's expert medical team includes surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists working together to diagnose and treat all types of cancer from A-Z. While Fox Chase Cancer Center specialists treat every type of common cancer, they treat more rare cancers than any other hospital. In addition to traditional treatment methods such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, Fox Chase Cancer Center currently offers more than 170 clinical trials, a number that tends to increase rather than decrease, annually.
Fox Chase Cancer Center houses the Lung Cancer Treatment Center, which treats all types of lung cancers including: mesothelioma, thymoma, pleural disease, endobronchial disease, non-small cell lung cancer, and small cell lung cancer. Under the leadership and direction of the physicians listed below, Fox Chase Cancer Center uses a wide variety of traditional and new treatment methods and techniques to treat lung cancer. It is not uncommon for "patients with limited lung function to have more treatment options at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia -- even if told elsewhere they have inoperable lung cancer."
The Fox Chase team of lung cancer specialists provides induction therapy, as well as video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) techniques and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery using the da Vinci system. New lung cancer treatment techniques offered at Fox Chase include: radiofrequency ablation, stereotactic radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy, laser photoradiation therapy, brachytherapy and airway stenting. These treatments are not available at other cancer centers in the region.
For patients with mesothelioma, the Lung Cancer Treatment Center offers surgery, and chemotherapy (the mainstay of mesothelioma treatment), as well as radiation therapy, and clinical trials. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy or both also may be used alone or in combination with surgery. Researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center are currently investigating the role of specialized proteins (detectable on a blood test) as a means of early detection and treatment monitoring for mesothelioma. Fox Chase Cancer Center also offers comprehensive pain relief for lung cancer patients.
